Fearing reprisals, he escaped and came to the US as a refugee. He served in the US Army, 69th Signal Battalion during the Berlin Wall Crisis of 1961. He met his wife in 1978 while on vacation in Hungary. They traveled extensively around the world. His health suffered a terrible turn after a brain surgery that limited his physical ability.
