John C. ( Jack ) Schmidt of Kayuta Lake, New York passed away on Friday March 24, 2017 at the Leo Center for Caring in Rochester, New York. Born October 22, 1934 in Utica, New York he was the son of late John and Katherine Bruker Schmidt. Jack was a graduate of Utica Free Academy and then joined the US Army, where he served until 1957. He earned his bachelor's degree in physics from Utica College of Syracuse University. Jack worked as an engineer at General Electric and retired from the aerospace division after 35 years of service. He was married in 1967 to Charlotte Cushman, a union that lasted over 25 years.
During his retirement years, Jack loved the lake, exploring the Adirondacks, and enjoyed traveling the world with his partner Elly. He was an active member of the Oneida County Historical Society, Lewis County Historical Society, Boonville Black River Canal Museum, Tramp and Trail Club of Utica and The Elfun Society of Utica, New York.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Norman Schmidt and his special friend and companion, Elly O'Donnell.
Survivors include his daughters, Cathy ( Alan ) Reid of Utica, New York and Cheryl Schmidt and her significant other, Mark Laskoski of Fairport, New York; his sister, Joan ( Ed ) Smith of Vero Beach, Florida; grandsons, Dennis Seyer of Grand Island, New York and Kyle Seyer of Silver Creek, New York; also nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors at the lake.
At Jack's request there will be no calling hours. A private gathering for family will be jeld at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leo Center for Caring at St. Ann's Community Portland Avenue Rochester, New York.
