DANIEL S. MARDER 

JUNE 9, 1943 - MAY 27, 2026

Quiet and introspective, Dan’s gentle nature belied a keen intelligence and a sharp and quirky sense of humor. A nature lover, he designed and nurtured beautiful gardens around his home replete with Alaskan cedar, Hinoki evergreens, Japanese maple and stone architecture. Dan enjoyed hiking the trails at Mendon Ponds Park, camera and hiking poles in hand. An avid amateur photographer, he shot and printed gorgeous images with his film cameras. A scientist above all else, Dan experimented with everything from testing the exact pitch of his stereo system to side by side testing of various green teas, his tonic of choice. 

Dan held degrees in Physics and Computer Science as well as an MBA. In the 1960s he worked on developing a collision avoidance system for aircraft at McDonnell Douglas Corporation. Later in his career he built early AI architecture for Xerox copy machineIs which earned him and his research team two United States patents. 

Dan faced his myriad health challenges with strength and dignity. Despite his suffering, he embraced life and love until his very last breath.  An email from a family member addressed to Dan says it all, “I have always admired your intelligence, and the fortitude that you have demonstrated in dealing with adversity.” 

A special thanks to Dr. Bernard and Catherine Plansky Family Practice, University of Rochester Oncologist Dr. Clive Zent and the Caring Hearts Hospice staff all of whom lovingly cared for Dan.

Dan will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Mary Elizabeth Reinhardt (Beth), sister, Diana Marder, daughter, Laurie Marder, cousin Abby Connor and the members of the Reinhardt clan.  

Dan will rest in the Green Burial section of White Haven Memorial park. White Haven Memorial park has a special area Certified by the Green Burial Council. This area is specifically for full body burial with no vault, no casket and no cremation. The body is placed in a biodegradable container or cloth shroud.  The goal is to allow the body to return to the soil naturally.  A flat, granite block with a small bronze plaque will bear Dan’s name, date of birth and date of death.  

Planting a tree or a donation to the International Waldenstrom’s Macroglobunemia Foundation in Dan’s memory would serve as a lasting tribute to him.
