Mary R. Nickles of Pittsford, New York on May 26, 2019. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry; her parents; sisters Joan and Helen, and brother James. She is survived by her sister, Ruth of Chimayo, NM; brother John (Linda) of Ocala, Fl; daughter Nancy Shaffer of Portland, OR.; son James (Susan) of Irondequoit, NY; her grandchildren, Noah Shaffer, Lincoln Shaffer and Jessica Nickles and numerous in-laws,nephews and nieces.
Mary graduated from the U of R in 1951. She was an active physicist and teacher from that time until her retirement in 2009. She had long tenures at Our Lady of Mercy HS and RIT in Rochester, NY. She also worked at the Atomic Energy Commission and Bell Labs.. Educational high points included involvement in writing of NYS physics curriculum from 1986 - 1988 and attending multiple space shuttle launches with students at Cape Canaveral in Florida.
She was an avid piano player. She started at age 3 and played for fun and to entertain others including the residents of her assisted living facility until very recently. She also enjoyed time spent with her immediate family and large extended family. Mary and Harry volunteered for many years, playing and leading music participation at The Episcopal Church Home in Rochester, NY.
Friends may call on Friday May 31st from 3:00 -6:00 PM at the funeral home. There will be be no memorial service and interment is private. In lieu of flowers those wishing may make memorial donations to the Hillside Children's Center 1183 Monroe Avenue Rocheaster, NY 14620 in her honor.
